Subject: Changes to ASW's Minix1 websites Jan 1 2003

Andy Tanenbaum has changed the Minix Info Sheet to point to a page on
my websites as the official FAQ site for PC Minix. This has inspired
me to make several improvements. These should all be effective by the
end of the day today, January 1, 2003 (US EST):

1. Design changes, web pages: I am designing all new pages to be
consistent in design, easier to navigate, and perhaps a little more
attractive. As I edit older pages I will apply the same standards. I
have kept in mind that Minix users may want to access the pages using
lynx or another text-based browser, and I will avoid features that do
not work well as text or that require advanced browsers or high
resolution video.

2. Technical change, web pages: I am using a new template for the web
pages and will try to check all new or changed pages against the HTML
certification service of the WWW Consortium.

3. Technical change, software: the web server is being upgraded to the
current version of Michael Temari's Minix httpd. This should solve
some problems, notably a problem with long directory listings when
viewed by some browsers.

Because my access to the minix1.bio.umass.edu site is better than my
access to the original site at minix1.hampshire.edu, all updates will
take effect first on the UMass site. However, most of the changes have
been tested already, and I expect they will all be in place on the
Hampshire College site very soon after.

I'd appreciate feedback about my sites. Particularly useful would be
reports of accessibility problems from different parts of the world or
at particular times of day.

A Happy New Year 2003 to all.
