History of the Minix1 Website

inix1.hampshire.edu celebrated its 5th birthday as a website in
February 2001.
Our history actually starts two years earlier than 1996. Here is a
summary:

April 1994: Minix1.hampshire.edu went public as an FTP site, running
Michael Temari's Tnet software on top of Minix 1.5 on a 286 machine
with 2M of RAM.

Sept 1994: hardware was upgraded to a 386 CPU. Minix 1.5 is 16-bit only,
however, and not much performance benefit noticed.

October 1995: OS upgrade to Minix 1.7.1.

February 1996: OS upgrade to Minix 1.7.2. HTTP (web) service announced.

July 1996: OS upgrade to Minix 1.7.3.

February 1997: OS upgrade to Minix 2.0.0, hardware upgraded to a 33Mhz 486
with 8M RAM.

December 1999: University of Massachusetts mirror site at turing.oit.umass.edu
announced. OS is Minix 2.0.2, hardware a 133 Mhz Pentium.

May 2000: Minix1.hampshire.edu OS upgrade to Minix 2.0.2. Hardware upgraded to
100 Mhz Pentium with 32M RAM.

November 2001: University of Massachusetts mirror site name changed from
turing.oit.umass.edu to minix1.bio.umass.edu.
