Smr was originally posted in March 1997.  I had an immediate need for
it at the time.  I quickly grabbed and made a number of changes that
made it work reasonably well with wmail and parts of Michael Temari's
mtmail.  Unfortunately I had a disk crash just after making the last of
these changes, in August 1997. I had already installed the binary on
another machine, and I have been using it with good results for more
than two years.

This is version 0.9bx.  I think it will work, but I never posted it
publically because I knew I could do better, if only I could find the
time.  I'm not sure which of the features of the version I have been
using are missing from this backup.  I'm posting this now because I
never did find the time and others have told me they are interested.

  Greetings!

  One night not so long ago, I found myself needing to send/receive email
from remote sites to and from my Minix machine.  Now, obviously there was
not sufficient time to write an entire SMTP server such as sendmail for
Minix, so instead, I did two things.

  First, I ported popclient to Minix.  This port is rather unclean and
perhaps even unstable (see the URL below for information on why) due to
the speed at which I did it.  This allowed me to grab mail from my ISP's
pop server and read it.

  But now I needed a way to send it, and for this, I wrote a utility
called 'smr'.  This sends mail to a remote site via SMTP.  It's also
fairly zippy.

  Now I have a way to send and receive email.

  I figured this set of two utilities might make life a bit easier for
those of you using Minix out there (assuming you have access to a system
running a pop server), and so now I'm releasing them.  They're too large
to attach to a message, so if you visit

  you can grab both of them.  Also on that webpage is a small, slightly
more in-depth description of each.  Both utilities have only been tested
on Minix-32, I have no idea if they'll work in -16, but I have no doubt
that they'll need some tweaking either.
