How to Unsubscribe from the Minix-l Mailing List

modified: Thu Nov 11 1999

I sometimes get personal e-mail or see messages posted to the Minix-l mailing list, asking to be unsubscribed from the list. Posting such a message to a mailing list is not considered good form, and I usually blocked the postings. Writing to a list owner is an annoyance for the list owner, too, although occasionally it is necessary. Hopefully this will help you avoid such faux pas.

Minix-l, like most mailing lists, sends out to new subscribers a short message with information about how to use the list, including how to unsubscribe. This message includes the following:

> You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF MINIX-L"
> command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU.
Sometimes this won't work. Specifically, if your mail configuration has changed so the "From:" address in your mail headers is not the same as the address by which the listserver knows you, an attempt to unsubscribe will fail. In this case you should write directly to the listowner, not to the list as a whole, to request help in unsubscribing. In the case of Minix-l, I am the listowner, and you may write to me at the address below.

The information you received when you first signed up for Minix-l is a summary. If you didn't save it, or want information on additional ways you can use the listserver, there is a LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU.
